Ways to Reduce Energy Loss at your Loading Dock

Loading docks are one of the biggest sources of energy loss in a warehouse or distribution facility. Frequent door openings, poor sealing around trailers, and outdated or improper equipment allow heated or cooled air to escape while letting outside air, moisture, and pests in. Addressing these weak points can lower your heating and cooling bills and improve comfort, safety, and productivity.

Seal the Dock Opening and Control Air Infiltration. One of the most effective ways to reduce energy loss. High quality dock seals or shelters create a tight barrier between the building and the trailer. An insulated door reduces heat gain in summer and heat loss in winter. Air curtains create an invisible barrier when the door is raised to minimize energy loss during loading / unloading. High speed doors in high traffic openings are the best solution or keep temperatures consistent.

Maintain and Properly Fit Dock Equipment. Dock Levelers that are properly sized and well maintained help eliminate gaps beneath trailers that allow air leakage. Worn dock seals and bottom seals, damaged door panels, and misaligned tracks can significantly increase heating and cooling costs. Regular inspections and preventative maintenance ensure dock equipment continues to perform efficiently.
